With about 70% of the human body being made up of water, keeping hydrated is a critical part of our health. Water ensures our cells have proper membrane structure, controls our body temperature, and so many of our organs use water in order to function correctly and in a healthy way. Here are five reasons why you should be drinking more:

Dehydration can cause many symptoms like headaches, feeling tired, dizzy, an unhealthy gut, and dry skin. Since your body loses water through breathing, sweating, and digestion, you need to replace what is going out by drinking more.

Your kidneys and liver require water in order to properly eliminate toxins, cleanse your blood, and help your body get rid of waste. Drinking water helps things keep moving, breaking down your food so that your body can absorb the nutrients, and can prevent constipation.

Water has great effects on your metabolism, and is actually necessary for your body to burn fat. Drinking a glass of water before eating (about 30 minutes before) can help you to feel fuller, therefore you eat less, causing your body to burn more calories. Foods like cucumbers, melons, tomatoes, watermelons, and oranges have a high water content, but are also full of fiber and nutrients.

4. Improves skin health

When you become hydrated your skin can become puffy, because your body is trying to retain the little water that it has. Hydrating and replenishing your skin prevents puffiness and keeps your skin from becoming dry and cracked. And because water detoxifies your body and flushes out toxins, it can also help get rid of acne.

5. Boost hair growth + health

Amazingly, water makes up 25% of a single strand of hair. Your hair follicles soak up water from your body so that it can grow strong and healthy, and if it can’t get enough water, this can make your hair dry, brittle, and lack-luster. If you want shiny, healthier, and longer hair, this is a great place to start. 

Try keeping a bottle on your desk, or set a reminder on your phone for refills, and keep sipping throughout the day.
